Here we go! Time to gear up for another homeschool year and take a look at what homeschool curriculum we are going to be using. Our summer has flown by and it’s been oh, so fun, but I’m read to get back into routine. I feel like the start of each school year, I see more and more entering into the world of homeschooling and I love it. With that comes lots of homeschool curriculum questions (which I love getting), so I wanted to share what we are using this year.
This will be our 16th year of homeschooling! I cannot believe it! Like really. Our oldest is graduating college this coming May, (again, cannot believe it) and our second oldest is now a senior. To say we have tried a lot of different curriculum over the years is an understatement. Guess what? We have even switched up our homeschool curriculum in the middle of the school year before because something wasn’t working for us. When we first began homeschooling, I was all for the boxed kits that come with everything you’d possibly need and you don’t have to do anything else to prep except open the book on the first day of school. Those are wonderful, and so helpful those first few years of homeschooling.
But, over the years we have learned what has worked and doesn’t work for our family. Each child is different, has different interests, and learns differently. So, after those first few years, we branched out and tried other options and pieced together our own curriculum. We ended up loving Masterbooks and have used it for almost every grade now. Yes, we’ve added in other things and resources, but we cannot say enough good things about Masterbooks. There is very little planning involved (and all the homeschool moms said, “Amen”) and each subject has it’s own lesson plan laid out for you & your student in the front part of each book.
The only thing you really need to do when it comes to planning is to take a look at what supplies you’re going to need ahead of time and gather them. Masterbooks is also a great curriculum for families who would like their children to do a little independent work to prepare them for later on in their schooling to move towards all independent work (and let me tell you how wonderful it is when your kids get older and can do the work themselves).
So what are we using this year? Here’s a line-up of our curriculum for our 12th, 9th, and 4th grader.
12th Grade:
- English 12 – English Composition – Dual Enrollment
- Intro to College Mathematics – Dual Enrollment
- Intro to Sociology – Dual Enrollment
- Couch to 5K – PE
- Some other courses he can/will take once these are completed that are also dual enrollment: English Comp II, Speech, Intro to Ethics, Intro to Statistics, Intro to Psychology, Macroeconomics, US Government, Human Biology & Lab, Environmental Science, and Art History I
9th Grade:
- Biology – Masterbooks
- English – IEW Literature/Composition
- Integrated Math – Khan
- Keyboarding – Keybr
- Music Appreciation – Outschool
- Intro to Logic – Masterbooks
- Spanish I – Babbel
- World History – Khan
4th Grade:
- Science – Masterbooks
- General Art – Creating a Masterpiece
- Handwriting – Masterbooks
- Language Arts – Masterbooks
- Math – Masterbooks
- Social Studies/History – Who Was/What Was series + project to go along with book
